Hartley’s love of movies brought him
to Hollywood to pursue a career as an actor for film and television.
He later brought his passion for the industry behind the camera
as Chairman of RKO Pictures and producer for film, television and
theater.

Hartley’s passion for the written word began
as a teenager when, at age 14, he entered and won an essay contest
sponsored by Warner Brothers.

"My grandmother always told me 'the chicken
eats his meal grain by grain,' so I believe it's not a good use
of time worrying if I deserve all the things that have happened
to me. I don't add them up, I am grateful for all of the experiences
and move on...one grain at a time."
