Hartley's passion for the written word began as a teenager when, at age 14, he entered and won an essay contest sponsored by Warner Bros. His prize-winning, 50 word essay, "Why I Would Like to Fly," earned him flying lessons. Later as a teenager at Annapolis, he was editor-in-chief of The Log, the school's bi-weekly magazine.

As life went on, Hartley continued to find pleasure in writing articles, screenplays and, most recently, poetry. He uses his experience as a carrier fighter pilot; as an actor; as a businessman and as a producer of film, television and theater as material for his writing.
